2008 Volunteer of the Year: Maria Dance PDF Print E-mail
Maria Dance, from Seattle, Washington, is the 2008 recipient of the HEH Volunteer of the Year Award. After learning about HEH as an undergraduate at Rice University, she organized a benefit concert in her home state that raised thousands of dollars to support construction of our flagship health center in rural Haiti. Maria began studying the violin at age 5, and in May 2008, she graduated from the Shepherd School of Music with a B.M. in Violin Performance under the tutelage of Kenneth Goldsmith. She has won numerous awards and honors, resulting in solo performance debuts with the Seattle Symphony, the Seattle Philharmonic and the Couer D'Alene Symphony. She has performed in music festivals in Italy, Quebec, New York and San Francisco. Maria enjoys many extracurricular activities, such as organizing benefit recitals for organizations (including Health Empowering Humanity and Latter Day Saint Humanitarian Aid), working as a wedding violinist, and hiking in the Olympic Mountains with her seven brothers. Thanks to Maria's efforts, HEH is able to continue carrying out our mission of making health accessible to all.
